Project Summary
The Utah Department of Transportation has contracted with InterPlan to define the key components of a comprehensive Child Access Routing Plan (CARP) program for each elementary, middle, and junior high school in the state of Utah. InterPlan developed a package of products whereby each School Community Council could produce a Child Access Routing Plan, currently required by state law. This package included a toolkit which described the elements of a CARP, how to develop a CARP that would increase the safety of children walking to and from school, and basic traffic engineering principles that should be considered in identifying safe routes. InterPlan also developed mapping software that has been made available statewide to assist in the development of CARP maps. This project has included continuous support after the initial plan development to the presently termed "SNAP" program within UDOT.
